Not only was it the 30th anniversary of gay pride in Ireland, but it was also the 20th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland. It's amazing to think we've come so far as a nation in terms of LGBTQ rights in such a short time. However, there is still so much more to do. Marriage Equality, parental rights and more widespread acceptance and respect for LGBTQ people are still to be achieved. Judging by the huge numbers, energy and great atmosphere at Pride this year, it's only a matter of time! Check out some photos of our banner and display below. ![]() The next book club will be held on Thursday, 4th of June at 7:30pm in Bewleys cafe. All are welcome! As chosen by the last book club's attendees and those in the online group, the play of the month is: Hedda Gabler (& A Doll's House) by Henrik Ibsen. You can read these texts for free from: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4093 & http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2542 "Hedda Gabler is the name, to my mind, of Ibsen's greatest play, and of the most interesting woman that Ibsen has created." "Over the years, Ibsen has been called a revolutionary, a nationalist, a romantic, a poet, an idealist, a realist, a socialist, a naturalist, a symbolist, a feminist, and a forerunner of psychoanalysis." As chosen by the last book club's attendees, the play of the month is: The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler. You can find the script online for free, or probably also printed. There's a HBO TV series, or you could go to see the play (let us know if you find an Irish production this month!) "I was worried about vaginas. I was worried about what we think about vaginas, and even more worried that we don't think about them. . . . So I decided to talk to women about their vaginas, to do vagina interviews, which became vagina monologues. I talked with over two hundred women. I talked to old women, young women, married women, single women, lesbians, college professors, actors, corporate professionals, sex workers, African American women, Hispanic women, Asian American women, Native American women, Caucasian women, Jewish women. At first women were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy. But once they got going, you couldn't stop them." About: **Trigger warning: This book deals with mental illness and suicide** Recently, Faber have released a 50th anniversary edition of the book and there's been some controversy about the cover: Guardian article on Bell Jar Cove And here's some more info: Esther Greenwood is brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under--maybe for the last time. In her acclaimed and enduring masterwork, Sylvia Plath brilliantly draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that her insanity becomes palpably real, even rational--as accessible an experience as going to the movies. A deep penetration into the darkest and most harrowing corners of the human psyche, The Bell Jar is an extraordinary accomplishment and a haunting American classic. When: Thursday 27 September 2012 Where: Millennium Forum, Derry/Londonderry Women into Public Life (WIPL) is organising this final conference to celebrate the work and achievements of the Project. Funded by the EU’s INTERREG IVA Programme, which is managed by the Special European Programmes Body (SEUPB), WIPL’s main focus has been addressing the under representation of women in public life. Actions have included leadership and mentoring programmes, seminars, learning between partners and research on the gender balance of decision-making structures. Throughout the WIPL project participants have engaged with and posed a range of questions with regard to women and leadership - What do women bring to leadership that is different? How do we empower and ‘disempower’ each other? If we had more women in leadership would we have a financial crisis? How can we ensure women are at the helm of the ship as we create a more just and fair society? This conference will bring together speakers to inspire and challenge us to address some of these questions. It will also celebrate the achievements of WIPL (due to finish in 2012), capture the learning from the project across three jurisdictions and build on the work undertaken. The conference will: Hear from women who have participated in WIPL’s training programmes Launch research findings on the gender balance of public bodies Learn from international experience on the implementation of gender quotas Have workshops on feminism, public speaking, women on boards and politics Motivate women to take their power and move into leadership roles Target audience – this conference is aimed at individuals and organisations with an interest in women’s equality and leadership, particularly all those women who have participated in WIPL’s training programmes and events over the three years; representatives from voluntary and statutory agencies, academics, policy makers and politicians. The Book: Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy Facebook Event: RSVP http://www.facebook.com/events/152011694938590/ About: It's fiction month, and we thought it would be good to read something by Maeve Binchy, who sadly passed away at the end of July. She was one of Ireland's most successful female writers. You can read more about her here: http://www.thejournal.ie/beloved-irish-writer-maeve-binchy-has-died-aged-72-538914-Jul2012/ "It began with Benny Hogan and Eve Malone, growing up, inseparable, in the village of Knockglen. Benny--the only child, yearning to break free from her adoring parents...Eve--the orphaned offspring of a convent handyman and a rebellious blueblood, abandoned by her mother's wealthy family to be raised by nuns. Eve and Benny--they knew the sins and secrets behind every villager's lace curtains...except their own. It widened at Dublin, at the university where Benny and Eve met beautiful Nan Mahlon and Jack Foley, a doctor's handsome son. But heartbreak and betrayal would bring the worlds of Knockglen and Dublin into explosive collision. Long-hidden lies would emerge to test the meaning of love and the strength of ties held within the fragile gold bands of a... Circle Of Friends."
